I moved to this area many years ago from the city of Atlanta, Georgia. The world has changed since I was a boy, and so too have the cities. When I was a child I recollect fondly my memories of exploring creeks, building tree houses, playing in the safety of neighborhood parks, and generally enjoying and exploring my youth without fear. This is hard to find in today's big cities, but that same easy going and wondrous lifestyle still exists today in these mountains. Strangers wave and say hello; In most places you can still leave your doors unlocked; The school systems are of good quality, peaceful and still exemplify community values; Neighbors know each other and often meet in the evenings as they take peaceful strolls; and Life.... well, life is just slower and more joyful. Many people harbor a misconception that this area is the "backwoods", but nothing could be farther from the truth. Improving technology has allowed the region to connect to the world of commerce via the Internet, which allows many to slow down and enjoy their families more, by fulfilling their work responsibilities through "telecommuting." An increasing number of affluent retirees have found a peaceful place to spend their days pursuing hobbies, or simply enjoying life. The increased population has brought better shopping opportunities, and a wider variety of restaurants and cultural activities. For the most part the changes have been within the keeping of the flavor of the region - merging with the qualities of the region, and not "suburbanizing" it. This is a very important aspect to ponder if you are considering a move here. Most of us who live here would like to keep things pretty much the way they are: Simple, Peaceful, Scenic, Harmonious, Clean, Fresh, with plenty of room for the bear, beaver, deer, turkeys, eagles, trout and other local wildlife. This is their home as well, and I urge visitors to treat excursions as if you were visiting in a neighbor's home. Please check your old baggage at the mountain's footstep - rushing malls, traffic, noise, confusion, crime, and stress. We will issue you new gear upon your arrival - Community, Caring, Kindness, a place to raise your families, or perhaps just a place to Rest from your journey. I have found peace here. I hope that all who come, whether as visitors, or as new residents, will find that peace too. Peace be unto you all, who enter the gates of this land - and seek this peace as well.
